I’m so grateful for each and every one of you who attended AAWI’s 5th Annual End of Summer Dinner. 💙It was such a beautiful evening! We had 55 amazing ladies this year, not the 100 we’ve had in the past , but it was still just as special, meaningful, and full of love.

AAWI has been attending Symphony on the Prairie for four years now! 🎶
For the past three years, we’ve had the pleasure of working with the same wonderful contact who helps us secure tickets and answers all of our questions with care. This year, she even gifted us tickets and offered half-price seats for the Beethoven and Beyoncé concert!

I always make sure to thank her , and this time, in addition to a handwritten note, I sent her a personalized “thank you” candle from Reverie Company . She recently emailed to say how much she appreciated it and mentioned that she loves candles, which made me so happy! 💛

If you haven’t already, check out Reverie’s website (link in comments) . They create beautiful customized gifts. I also ordered ten more candles for AAWI to have on hand for “thank you,” “thinking of you,” and Foundation/Vision Circle member gifts.

I spent my dollars with Spex Savvy a few weeks ago, and I have to say it was a great experience! The owner, Teresa Clay came right to my house, and I must’ve tried on way too many pairs of glasses (she was so patient with me!). It was such a pleasure working with her.

Teresa is an optician and the proud owner of her own business. I love that she created this service as it gives us so many fun and stylish options! I usually go for something simple , but over the last couple of years, I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone and loving it.

This was a big deal for me because I don’t usually spend much on prescription glasses. My family and I typically order from an online discount site — which we like — but I’m really glad I decided to shop with Spex Savvy this time. I’d just seen the eye doctor a couple of months ago, so the timing was perfect.

I’ve wanted to support Teresa for a while, and when I saw that Spex Savvy became an AAWI Vision Member and ran an ad in September, it definitely caught my eye (pun intended!). I’m so grateful for the perfect timing.

She even hosts Spex Savvy Parties, so don’t be surprised if you see me hosting one soon! Check her out — website is in the comments.

Wow! Tonight’s event ~ Beethoven x Beyoncé ~ was absolutely amazing! 🎶✨
Huge thank you to our contact at Symphony on the Prairie! She really hooked us up! Just wow! I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m so glad we had this opportunity. I had such a great time!

The talent was incredible! If you don’t already follow them, you should! They really showed out and gave us an unforgettable experience.

Thank you to the 35 ladies who attended (we missed the three who couldn’t make it). I was hoping to meet everyone but didn’t get the chance . I did get to meet Francine, Tish, and Fellicia, and I can’t wait to meet everyone else one day soon! 🤎

Our family officially joined Bethel AME Church - 17777 Little Chicago Road - Noblesville, IN 46062
today! 🙌 I’ve lived in Indiana for 10 years and been married the same, and you could not have told me back then that it would take this long to find a church home. But I’m so grateful.

Under the leadership of Pastor Mindy Mayes, this truly feels like a new chapter. Over the past decade, our family has visited many churches in person and online- Eastern Star, Heartland, Northview, Traders Point, People’s Church, New Beginnings Fellowship, and a few more in Lafayette. Some we visited several times, others just once or twice. Since the pandemic, our visits slowed down, but I’m thankful that I finally visited Bethel AME a few months ago.

I’m also grateful for the sermons and teachings I received at all of those churches throughout the years. They were truly a blessing along the journey.

Today, we felt nothing but warmth and welcome. We are excited, grateful, and looking forward to what God has in store for us here. ❤️

For my birthday, I wanted to bake myself a cake, and a week later, I finally did it! 🎂✨ It turned out so delicious. Every year I bake (even though I’m not really a baker) one for my husband and our now 15-year-old-hubby always requests carrot cake, and my teen goes for strawberry. And yes…we eat the whole cake every time! 😂 It’s the only time that I bake.

It took me a little while to get around to mine, but I’m so glad I did. Sometimes it’s the small things that mean the most. 💕 Maybe next year I’ll work myself up to piping…for now, I just skip the decorating part because I’m too ready to eat it!

All from scratch , even the icing . Yummy !

This summer, my husband and I had the chance to attend an event for AALFI (African American Legacy Fund of Indianapolis). We already knew we would be donating, but after hearing the details of their mission and learning who it truly impacts, we were moved to give even more.

AALFI’s MISSION : To promote philanthropy and harness the collective power of African Americans to positively impact our community .

What stood out to us was that AALFI allows donors to have input on where funds may go. That made us feel not just like donors, but like true partners in creating meaningful change. It reminded me so much of why I started AAWI—to give African American women in Indiana a safe space to connect, empower, and support one another.

AALFI’s values align so closely with my own and with AAWI’s mission:
✨ Engagement – Change happens when we’re aware of and connected to our community.
✨ Giving – When we come together to share our time, talents, and treasures, the impact multiplies.
✨ Empowerment – True impact comes when our voices and resources align.

Sherie Scott is a servant and transformational leader from Augusta, Georgia. She has been a dedicated Hoosier since 2012, a wife, and mother of 4. Sherie has been an educator for 20 years, serving as Director of Schools for the State of Indiana/Indiana Department of Education Vertical and as the Founding Assistant Principal with the Indianapolis Public Schools Innovation Network, leading students and staff to a Grade A State rating for growth throughout her leadership. Sherie also taught 5th grade in the Metropolitan School District of Pike Township and was awarded Teacher of the Year at Snacks Crossing Elementary School.

Sherie is the owner of The Education Toolkit, providing education coaching, public speaking, and tutoring support to elementary and college students. Sherie is also the owner of The Sophisticated Diva, online jewelry, accessories, and apparel boutique. She participates in several community vendor events and sponsors other businesses, specifically women minority owned businesses and businesses of color.

Sherie is actively involved with her community through various community service organizations, The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Indianapolis Chapter- Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Tau Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. education sorority, National Council of Negro Women – Indianapolis Section, Greater Indianapolis Section NAACP, The Exchange at the Indianapolis Urban League, Leading Ladies board member and mentor, Boundless Blessings board member, Delta G.E.M.S. Mentoring, Indianapolis Black Alumni Council, African American Women of Indiana, Sister Alliance, and Girl Gang Indy. Sherie is actively involved in the Pike Township Democrat Club, served as precinct committee person, and has supported marketing and strategy for several democratic campaigns for local, state, and national candidates.

Sherie is actively involved with her community through various community service organizations, The Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Indianapolis Chapter- Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Tau Chapter of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. education sorority, National Council of Negro Women – Indianapolis Section, Greater Indianapolis Section NAACP, The Exchange at the Indianapolis Urban League, Leading Ladies board member and mentor, Boundless Blessings board member, Delta G.E.M.S. Mentoring, Indianapolis Black Alumni Council, African American Women of Indiana, Sister Alliance, and Girl Gang Indy. Sherie is actively involved in the Pike Township Democrat Club, served as precinct committee person, and has supported marketing and strategy for several democratic campaigns for local, state, and national candidates.

I met the owners of the company at a Real Estate Networking Event a couple of months ago.

This is a big step for us—it’s only the second time ever that we’ve added a highlight video to our budget, and the first time ever we’ll also have professional photography! 📸🎥

Last year, Keyera Constable did an amazing job creating our highlight video through one of her companies—we absolutely loved it! This year, she’ll be with us again as a vendor, so you’ll get to see her either way!

We did shift the budget from the 360 video to highlight video + photography. If you know anyone who’d like to get in front of our community through advertising and might consider donating that service, let me know! 🙌

✨ Starting today, I am limiting the hours I dedicate to AAWI. This is a big shift for me because, for the last four years and four months, I have poured almost full-time hours into AAWI (volunteer) . I’m not going anywhere, but I am choosing to put more of that time into behind the scenes work, self-care and family.

Many of you may not know my full story, but AAWI was born because I saw a need and I am so glad I stepped out to create it.

Going forward, I’ll be spending more of my time behind the scenes, working with others to help keep many of the things we’ve built alive. I’ll still be posting, but my hosting of events will be much more limited.

💡 Here are ways you can help keep AAWI strong:
• Participate in our new incentive program (coming soon!) that will encourage members to host events with part of their costs covered.
• Attend the events I do create.
• Sign up for our Boss and Queen Memberships, which include quarterly events and other benefits.
• Join our Foundation or Vision memberships to support our growth.
• Show up for committee meetings as we need your voices and hands!
• Support our fundraising efforts so that venues, vendors, and members in need can be taken care of without so much strain.

One of the first big changes: our 5th Annual Christmas Dinner will be removed from the calendar so I can focus on our 4th Annual Family Brunch with Black Santa 🎅🏾 and our 3rd Annual Elephant Book Exchange for Book Club.

And… please stay tuned … because we are already planning our largest event yet, celebrating AAWI’s 5th anniversary next spring! 🎉

I will still be doing the following :

* Host book club monthly at my home in Westfield
* Plan birthday events along with Sylvia and Tanya (we split the year).
